Being synonymous with wildlife and landscape diversity, it is no surprise that Madikwe is a Game Reserve that attracts safari-loving tourists the world-over. Wild Eye have been conducting safari's here over the past 8 years and it has proven to be a very popular choice for our guests, a firm-favourite if you will. The Reserve is currently situated on what used to be farm land, now rehabilitated back into its original state consisting of breathtaking scenery, pristine bushveld, and a plethora of exciting wildlife.
Wild Eye takes exclusive use of the four star Nkurru Lodge, meaning that we have the camp all to ourselves, providing a very authentic homely and relaxed feel to the safari experience.
Situated in the North West province of South Africa, not all that far from the border with Botswana, lies the 75 000 Hectare Madikwe Game Reserve. Being the fifth largest Reserve in South Africa, it is incredibly diverse, not only with exceptional scenery, but with the wildlife encounters on offer; the magnificent 7 (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Wild Dog & Cheetah) to name but a few.
Whilst the area is known for experiencing temperatures on either extreme during the winter and summer months, including relatively high average annual summer rainfall, the reserve allows for off-road driving, which ensures we get as close as possible to wildlife, which may otherwise have been inaccessible.
Nkurru Lodge is situated in the heart of the property, allowing us to explore a large chunk of this beautifully diverse reserve, North, South and central. The lodge itself overlooks a productive waterhole (pictured below), which has always provided our guests with great game viewing, from general game to elephants, rhino, buffalo and all the big cats. It is a great spot to sit and unwind during the day or to observe after dinner with a gin and tonic in hand in anticipation of what might come down at night.
The accommodation on our Madikwe safari is on a single basis with the option of sharing for couples. With a maximum of 5 guests, and 1 Wild Eye Guide we ensure the perfect balance between personal attention, and space available between guests on the safari vehicle.
Each guest has their own spacious luxury room with a bathroom en suite, outdoor shower for those who don't mind the chilly morning temperatures, and a private bush-facing deck area.
Whilst the focus of the safari is to spend as much time out in the field as possible, you may wish you had more time to enjoy in these stunning rooms!

Camera Gear Recommendations
As mentioned, having the ability to off-road means that we can get really close to animals. What this means in terms of camera gear, is pretty much anything between a range of 70mm and 400mm. The area is so diverse and so often provides great opportunities of photographing animals in their environments, that the longer zoom lenses allows one to create close up, texture type shots of your subject, whilst a wider angle ensures you capture 'animals in their environment' type images to create a diverse portfolio that we have no doubt you'd be very happy with.
Ideally a 70-200mm paired with a slightly longer zoom lens of say 200-400 is ideal.
Why Travel with Wild Eye to Madikwe?
Exclusive use of the lodge, allows the group the flexibility to operate as we please. No set game drive times, and an adaptable team of kitchen and lodge staff, means we can come and go to and from the lodge determined only by the movements of the animals out in the field. That, in conjunction with the personalised photographic tuition, and Lightroom editing tutorials, makes this one of the best value for money safari's out there.
As the video, and image gallery below will demonstrate, our Madikwe Safari offers a diverse range of wildlife as well as landscape photographic opportunities. What we love about this safari, is that no two days are the same and the excitement of heading out on a new and unknown adventure each morning when leaving for game drive is immeasurable. We love this destination, no matter the time of year, (green season or dry), as it is a safari that will leave you wanting to return for more - guaranteed!
