Desert Wildlife of Namibia

Board a flight from Windhoek to Doro Nawas Camp. Arrive in time for lunch & check in, then enjoy an afternoon drive in the Namib Desert.

A morning spent visiting the geological features of the area which include the rock engravings at Twyfelfontein, The Brandberg and the Damara Living Museum. Our afternoon will be spent visiting the petrified forest and the organ pipes (incredible rock formations in the region). The camp itself allows for the beds to be rolled out onto the deck and for you to spend the night beneath a blanket of stars!

A morning game drive before transferring to the nearby Damaraland Camp where we will explore one of the main river beds in the region for desert adapted rhino, lion and elephant. The landscapes of this region are breathtakingly beautiful and from a photographic perspective, will provide you with some of the most unique images imaginable.

A morning exploration in search of desert adapted species of the region before flying to Damaraland. Here we will enjoy lunch and a short afternoon game drive searching for general game and taking in the scenery of the region.

We will spend two full days out in the Palmwag concession in search of Desert Adapted Black Rhino. We set out in the morning by vehicle to follow the Save the Rhino monitors as they track one of their charges – the desert-adapted black rhino. Due to the vast terrain, long distances can be covered, with other wildlife to be seen along the way.
In the Palmwag Concession, Wilderness Safaris works closely with Save the Rhino Trust Namibia (SRTN), a highly-respected NGO almost single-handedly responsible for the preservation of critically endangered desert-adapted black rhino in the area. SRTN focuses on the protection, monitoring and understanding of the local black rhino population and is funded through donations and partnerships. Thanks to its work, rhino population numbers have quintupled over the past 30 years. The challenge they now face is increased poaching in the sub-region.

A relaxed morning in camp followed by breakfast and a transfer to the airstrip for our flight north to end this 11 night trip which is to be spent at the spectacular Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp, one of the most amazing camps located in the heart of desert lion country where most of the footage and images for Vanishing Kings and Vanishing Kings II was captured.

Game drives in Hoanib showcase the magnitude of the landscape and offer the best possibilities of seeing desert-adapted wildlife. Our drives will be focused along the edges of the Hoanib River system where Winterthorn’s provide valuable dry season forage for a range of species including the desert adapted elephants of the region. We will also be doing our best to find and photograph the desert lions of the region.

On one of the days we will head west to the Skeleton Coast and Mowe Bay. The fascinating 4x4 trip to the coast takes you via the wilderness of the Hoanib River and floodplain, the dune fields and Klein Oasis, while the Skeleton Coast itself reveals huge Cape fur seal colonies and shipwreck remains. Weather-dependent, a scenic flight back to camp offers a magnificent perspective of your journey from the air.

Morning drive followed by scenic internal flights from Hoanib to Doro Nawas and then on to Windhoek where our Namibian adventure comes to an end.
