Day 1
Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Bisate
You are met at Kigali International Airport and brought to a meet-and-greet rendezvous to discuss the Rwandan leg of your itinerary. After a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, you are transferred to Bisate Lodge, either by helicopter or luxury 4x4 road transfer. The area around Bisate welcomes you with dramatic views of the peaks of the volcanoes Bisoke, Karisimbi and Mikeno rearing up through the Afro-alpine forests of nearby Volcanoes National Park. Six sumptuous en-suite rooms maximise comfort, warmth and views while retaining environmental principles and reflecting the culture of surrounding rural Rwanda.
Day 2 & 3
Full Day Exploring Bisate
The legendary Virunga Massif in northern Rwanda is home to volcanoes, swathes of cloud forest and half the world’s total population of Critically Endangered mountain gorillas. Gorilla trekking to one of twelve habituated groups takes place in the spectacular rainforest of Volcanoes National Park, as does trekking to Dian Fossey’s grave. Exploring further afield takes in Lake Kivu, one of the world’s deepest lakes at 475 metres, or the scenic Twin Lakes of Ruhondo and Burera.
Day 4
Travel Day: Bisate to Akagera
Return to Kigali via helicopter or road transfer for your onward three-hour road transfer to Akagera National Park. Magashi Camp is situated in the productive and phenomenally diverse north-eastern corner of Akagera National Park, overlooking scenic Lake Rwanyakazinga. Accommodation at Magashi is in six spacious and airy tented guest rooms offering uninterrupted views over picturesque Lake Rwanyakazinga, while the main area comprises a luxurious lounge, dining and bar area, wine cellar and pool, as well as an expansive viewing deck with convivial fire pit. The architecture and interiors pay homage to traditional Rwandan culture
Day 5 & 6
Full Days Exploring Akagera
Guests are able to view a range of wildlife on expertly-guided game drives, walks and boating trips. Teeming with plains game and other megafauna, the park now also boasts a healthy population of lion which were introduced by African Parks in 2015 after a 20-year absence; black rhino were reintroduced in 2017. Other game includes buffalo, leopard, elephant, giraffe, spotted hyaena, zebra, topi, roan, eland and more. Akagera also boasts almost 500 species of birds including the spectacular shoebill with its implausibly massive bill and the near-endemic red-faced barbet.
Day 7
Akagera to Kigali
Depart Akagera National Park via a three-hour road transfer for Kigali International Airport and your onward travel arrangements.
