Surprised By An Elephant

Hello all

My 2019 safari's are a wrap and what a year its been!

I was lucky enough to "end" my year in two new destinations namely;

  • South Luangwa National Park
  • Hwange National Park

My guest Barbara Hartman (who you should follow on Instagram as she has incredible images - CLICK HERE) and I spent a wee in each reserve and what an adventure it was.

When it comes to planning a safari, there is always a particular purpose to visit the destinations we go to and the reason for this safari was to spend time with Carmine Bee-Eaters and Elephant in Mfuwe Lodge as seen below;

We were very lucky to have nailed many powerful Bee-Eater images as well as spend time with, "George" the elephant in the camp everyday. Herds of elephant make their way into Mfuwe lodge daily during the dry season as they come and feed on the wild mango that grown in the camp.

Non of the above came as a surprise as we had specifically planned the safari around this but George, he was the one to really surprise us. One day after his nap on the lodge lawn, he woke up to enjoy the few wild mango that had fell durning his time out before we followed him out the lodge to a nearby Baobab tree.

He spent time feeding on some of the lower hanging branches and suddenly he did something non of us expected him to do;

As seen in the image above, he did what a Mana Pools elephant does and I'm sure its pretty self explanatory.

We had no idea that the elephant in South Luangwa National Park do this and so I am pleased to say that after all these years of guiding, some things or creatures still find a way to blow my mind.

What an epic experience this was, I couldn't of asked for a better end to my 2019 safaris!

Until next time;

Happy Snapping!
