When It Rains It Pours

Last year in November I hosted a back to back safari in Madikwe Game Reserve, this means I spent two full weeks at Nkurru hosting two safaris and how different these two safaris were…

I arrived to a very dry and barren looking reserve with very little vegetation and very little water. This is the normal for this time of year as the area has not received its big rains of the season yet. With very little water around, wildlife was teaming into the lodge waterhole on a constant basis.

Driving around out in the field, there was lots of dust in the air and animals were concentrated around what little water was left in the waterholes. One of these waterholes being Thlou dam, which has been very different each time I have visited. This time, it was the driest I have ever seen it. We spent a few afternoons by the water watching as animal after animal came down to have a drink of water.

Below is an image of Thlou dam during my first week in Madikwe...

The very first night of the second week and second safari, we had a massive down pour, it rained the entire evening into the early hours of the morning.

Waking up, my outdoor shower was completely flooded and it was still raining... We had a total of sixty five(65) millimeters of rain in one night!

With it being so dry, the ground was extremely hard, this meant that there was massive water run off and due to positioning of waterholes, this meant that all waterholes, from the small waterhole in front of camp to Thlou dam, were completely full.

From arriving to a dry and dusty Madikwe, to leaving a transforming Reserve with new lush green shoots, it was simply amazing to see the transition during my time in the bush and reminded me of my times as a full time lodge based guide seeing the change of seasons.
