Best Of Kenya
Mike was my guide on my first Kenyan – and Wild Eye – adventure for the Big Cats & Tuskers trip. I can’t say enough about how wonderful Mike was during our time on safari – and before! I encountered many delays coming into the Kenya. While delayed in airports in Europe, Mike – and the Wild Eye team in Johannesburg – stayed in constant contact with me to stay updated on my arrival time and to adjust on-the-ground arrangements. When I finally made it to Kenya, I just missed the flight from Nairobi to Amboseli. I connected with Mike by phone upon landing in Nairobi and he was so kind, gracious, and understanding of my late arrival.

Best of Mana Pools
Our Wild Eye Guide Johan Van Zyl was fantastic. He advised us about our camera settings to get the maximum from our photos while at the same time not encroaching on our personal creativity. We had time during the day when Johan helped us process our photos with Lightroom.

Best of Serengeti
“I LOVE Johan!!! He’s a down to earth guy which I really like, no airs and graces and will do anything to help, always cheerful, and always professional!”

Back to Basics: Metering modes & Exposure compensation
Okay, so there is one more pretty technical piece that we need to cover in the Back to Basics series before moving on to the more exciting stuff. That is Metering modes & exposure compensation. Back to Basics: ISO
So, we are comfortable with the numbers on the front of our lens, we understand what aperture is and how we can use it creatively. We are able to use (and manipulate) our autofocus to ensure that we are focusing in the right region, and finally we understand how important shutter speed is in obtaining [...]

Unique Leopard behaviour in the Lower Zambezi
Leopards are without a doubt one of the most sought after animals on safari and recently my guests and I witnessed some unique leopard behaviour in the Lower Zambezi. Leopards, although primarily solitary animals, exhibit a complex social structure that is shaped by their need for territories and breeding opportunities. Understanding the social dynamics of [...]

Back to Basics: Shutter Speed
Now that we have been able to achieve autofocus on our subject and have selected the correct aperture to ensure that the we render our subject sharp and in focus, there is really only one other variable in the equation that can go wrong - Shutter Speed. Quite simply, shutter speed refers to the duration that [...]

Back to basics: Autofocus
Autofocus is far more complicated and involved than most people understand. For the purposes of this series, I am going to try and keep things as simple as possible. Essentially, Autofocus allows the camera to make use of a number of Autofocus (AF) sensors to shift a series of elements inside the lens in such [...]
