The Northern Serengeti, especially around Kogatende, is a gem for wildlife lovers. With its mix of rolling grasslands, scattered woodlands, and the winding Mara River, this area near the Kenyan border (literally a stone throw away from the Wild Eye Mara Camp) offers a much quieter, more personal safari experience compared to the busier southern parts of the Serengeti. Kogatende, and in particular the area to the est of the Bologonja River, is a key wildlife hotspot, where you can find everything from lush riverine forests and rocky outcrops to open savannahs teaming with game.
Around August and September, the Northern Serengeti, particularly the Kogatende area, becomes a focal point for one of nature's most awe-inspiring spectacles: the Great Wildebeest Migration. During these months, over a million wildebeest, accompanied by zebras and gazelles, move northwards in search of greener pastures, navigating their way through the perilous Mara River. This epic journey is marked by dramatic river crossings, where herds face the dual threats of strong currents and lurking predators like crocodiles.
This was the setting for a week long safari during which I hosted 3 guests over 6 nights. 2 of the guests had opted to combine their time here in the Northern Serengeti with a week in the Wild Eye Mara Camp which quite literally gave them the best possible exposure to both the Kenyan (Masai Mara) and Tanzanian (Serengeti) side of the Great Migration.
