What is the best safari destination in Africa?

When people begin to plan their perfect safari, it often leads them to the age old question - "What is the best safari in Africa?"

Now, the answer isn't always as easy as The Wild Eye Mara Camp but there are a few things that people should consider when deciding on where to go.

Some of the most important factors people should consider when deciding on where to go for a safari, is what you are hoping to see (and where it's likely you'd see it), what you'd like to experience, for how long, with how many people, and at what budget.

Lions

If you want to see lions, Southern and Eastern Africa has you covered!

To see a lion in its natural habitat is one of the most humbling, impressive sights an African safari can offer.

Enjoying the enviable position at the top of the food chain with no predators, the lion rules the wide-open African plains. The largest and grandest of all cats, they live in small prides led by a single male or a coalition of males.

The Masai Mara, situated in Kenya is home to some of the most diverse lion dynamics on the planet. With endless acres of space for these animals to venture into between Kenya and Tanzania, there are multiple prides that have settled in their territories along with nomadic lions on the journey to start their own pride.

The open spaces and abundance of prey in The Masai Mara make for some of the best lion sightings out there.

Leopards

If you want to see leopards, leopards, and more leopards, look no further than South Africa's Sabi Sand...

A lot of individuals favour photographing and viewing the big cats, particularly the very elusive leopard.

If you are one of these people who can never see or photograph enough leopard

OR

you are one of the unfortunate individuals who has never been able to view a leopard in the flesh because it kept hiding in the thickets or it eluded you, then the following safari destination is the best Safari for YOU!

The Sabi Sands located in South Africa and particularly Mala Mala Game Reserve is renowned for some of the most prolific leopard viewing! As some of our previous guests have so eloquently put it, if you visit this area, you will see leopards falling out of the trees!

This is no lie…

The chances of not seeing a leopard is there, but HIGHLY unlikely.

Cheetahs

If you want to see cheetahs, the plains of East Africa is where you'd be headed...

On the top of my list of places to see cheetah would be the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. Undoubtedly this is perfect cheetah habitat with its open grassy plains and abundance of prey species. Cheetah can be found here all year round, however, I would suggest from December – March for the highest chance of sightings.

A close second on my list would be Kenya, and in particular the Masai Mara National Park which is home to one of the highest densities of cheetah in Africa. The Mara understandably has one of the highest visitor numbers resulting in many of the animals, including the cheetah being less wary of vehicles.

Best of The Serengeti

What's not to love about the Serengeti. It's iconic in every way, cemented in our minds thanks to countless films and documentaries, novels and adventures. This Best of the Serengeti tour will showcase the beauty, excitement and action of the region to you across a diverse 14 day experience. You’ll visit the less known Tarangire at the foothills of the Ngorongoro Crater.

Elephants

If you want to see elephants, a number of our safari's will get you up close and personal with 'Ellies'...

Elephants are a keystone species in terms of Africa's ecosystems and, without these majestic mega-herbivores, we may not enjoy the diversity of mammals that we currently have on the continent. Apart from their ecological importance, they are also a highly sought after photographic subject!

Elephants are perhaps the most fascinating African mammals to watch on safari. They are so intelligent, sociable, dextrous and communicative – you can watch them all day, and never get bored.  In general the best time to travel to Africa to see elephants is the dry season, which tends to be June to September.

Amboseli National Park is considered one of the best places to go in Africa to see an elephant. If you are looking for those iconic images of elephants in front of the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, then this is the destination for you.

Secondly, Mana Pools is one of Africa’s most scenic parks, with the mighty Zambezi River frontage and the beautifully photogenic glades of large riverine trees. Now, add to this stunning scene groups of elephant moving through the sunlit forest. This is a recipe for the perfect elephant sighting!

If you’re really lucky, you might also see one of the old bulls standing on his hind legs to reach the branches of the trees to eat. It is thought there are just a handful of bulls who have learnt this trick – and this has to be one of the highlights of wild elephant watching.

Amboseli & Lake Nakuru Photo Tour - Kenya

This safari affords guests the opportunity to spend a bit more time in two of Kenya’s most popular photographic destinations. Amboseli finds itself at the foothills of the iconic Mount Kilimanjaro. It's one of the most scenic national parks in Africa and when the mountain is in full view will leave you with memories like no other. There is an abundance of wildlife that call the park home and you also stand a good chance of seeing a few of the iconic tuskers, some of the largest elephants in Africa today.

Best of Mana Pools - Zimbabwe

Set up camp on the only water source in the southern parts of the Mana. Walk the scenic floodplain and sit at the feet of giants. Wait in absolute stillness at a waterhole deep in to the Mopani woodlands. Mana Pools is incredibly diverse and has so much to offer.

The ultimate elephant tour - Zimbabwe & Botswana

Considered to be one of the most iconic animals in Africa, this exciting tour gives you the best opportunity to view and photograph elephants in arguably the most stunning and di=verse locations anywhere in Africa.

This tour provides an amazing opportunity to spend time with Africa’s giants in some of the most breathtaking landscapes. The combination of Mana Pools, Hwange and the Chobe not only allows you to view Elephants in different environments, but also to observe vastly different behaviour.

Wild dogs

If you want to see African wild dogs, these safari's provide you with the best chance...

With population numbers increasing, the exhilarating experience of seeing wild dogs is becoming a staple of South Luangwa game drives. Although traditionally only seen in the rainy season, the park is now seeing wild dog more regularly and in larger numbers throughout the year

In Zimbabwe, every year wild dogs den in and around Mana Pools and provide visitors with regular and exciting sightings through the safari season. At Kanga Camp, you can let the game come to you while you look over the camp’s waterhole.  It is particularly productive in the dry season as it is the only source of water for miles around.

In South Africa, the African wild dog is the flagship specie of Madikwe, which is famous for its packs of the small, feisty predator. The reserve is also malaria-free, which makes it great for families. It is home to many other game species, including Africa’s famous Big 5.

Treasures of The Lower Zambezi - Zambia

The Lower Zambezi is a destination where you simply get lost in its beauty. It offers a great variety of activities from exploring the breathtaking forests, to canoeing down the mighty Zambezi River. It's perhaps one of the most underrated parks in Africa!

The Lower Zambezi valley is a huge rift in the earth's crust, through which a mighty river flows. Over millennia, mineral-rich volcanic soils deposited by the Zambezi have nurtured lush vegetation, while old meanders and oxbow lakes add to the attraction for wildlife.

Best of Mana Pools - Zimbabwe

Set up camp on the only water source in the southern parts of the Mana. Walk the scenic floodplain and sit at the feet of wild dogs. Wait in absolute stillness at a waterhole deep in to the Mopani woodlands. Mana Pools is incredibly diverse and has so much to offer.

Madikwe Safari - South Africa

Towering rocky outcrops, red sands, open grasslands and large waterholes drawing animals for a drink during the intense Madikwe heat, all form part of the exciting experience on offer at this malaria-free Big 5 safari destination

It’s often thought that it is simply not possible for one safari destination to “have it all” and perhaps this statement is indeed true. That said, the diverse and wildly dynamic fauna and flora of Madikwe Game Reserve is about as close as it gets.

Malaria Free

If you want a Malaria-free area, this is the best safari in Africa for you...

One of the big advantages of traveling to South Africa compared to other African safari destinations, is that there are a number of game reserves where you can see the Big Five in malaria free areas. This is fantastic if you’re traveling with small children or want to avoid taking anti-malarials.

In my opinion, Madikwe Game Reserve offers the most consistent game viewing of the malaria free game reserves, and with its classic bushveld terrain, it really feels like you’re on safari. Madikwe is a 4-hour drive from Johannesburg or alternatively, you can fly in on a charter flight.

Family Friendly Marataba & Madikwe Safari - South Africa

Great Migration

If you want to experience The Great Migration, this is the best safari in Africa for you...

The two words ‘Great Migration’ give rise to a common thought. Millions of wildebeest alongside hundreds of thousands of zebra amongst a few other species crossing the formidable water of the Mara River.

This thought is not wrong but there is so much more to it. The continual milling chaos of the year round great migration is rightfully known as the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth. Showcasing scenes of millions of wildebeest and zebra moving across the open plains of the Masai Mara and the Serengeti and of course crossing the mighty Mara River are synonymous with the wildebeest migration.

For many people around the world the Great Migration epitomizes the ultimate African safari experience and is still one of the quintessential bucket list items that any wildlife and nature enthusiast should tick off of their list at least once.

The thrill and excitement of watching one of nature’s most incredible wildlife spectacles unfold before your eyes is something that you will cherish for years to come and can be experienced in Kenya and Tanzania.

Serengeti & Masai Mara Migration Safari - Tanzania

Every year from June to September the great migration moves northwards to the Mara River. This dangerous river flows right through their feedings grounds and in addition to the resident crocodiles, lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas all stake their claim to the abundance of prey. It’s an action packed experience, never a dull moment. Although the second half of the promises intense action, the tour kicks off in Tarangire, a short drive from Kilimanjaro itself. We’ll visit this part during the height of the dry season for a game viewing bonanza, and see one of Africa's greatest gathering of elephants.

Perhaps you don’t mind spending time in the company of others, but when it comes to your safari you want to be looked after, and perhaps even taught a new skill by a seasoned, professional safari guide. This is the Wild Eye private guided safari experience.

Feel free to read more about our custom and private safaris below!

Custom Tour

Whilst there are many great examples of travel itineraries which generally combine the most popular attractions in a region, there will never be a package which has the ideal duration, combination of destinations or price that suits everyone. We will work with you to customise everything from the price and level of accommodation, to the destination and areas to visit in order to maximise the potential to see and experience as much as possible.

Private Guided Tours

A private guided experience is centered around you & your enjoyment. You’ll travel in the company of a professionally qualified Wild Eye guide for the entire duration of the tour. It’s private and exclusive and therefore offers you the opportunity to enjoy the thrill of being on safari to the fullest, all whilst being in the company of a guide and host whose sole purpose is to ensure that you are taken care of beyond your expectation, from start to finish.

In episode # 394 of The Wild Eye Podcast, myself and Gerry van der Walt share a few thoughts on the question, "What is the best safari in Africa?"

Different Seasons on Safari

Now that you know what the Best Safari in Africa is, you may be interested to know when the best season is to go on Safari.

Different Safari seasons can give you totally different experiences, many of which a lot of people are not aware of. In short, there is no bad time to be on safari, but certain areas tend to peak at different times of the year.

In this blog you can find a breakdown on which places might be best to visit during different times of the year..

What does a Safari Cost?

In this blog post, I’ll go a little deeper into the components of a typical safari cost, and provide a breakdown of the costs associated with a safari to Africa with Wild Eye.

"Well, its not that simple unfortunately. There is indeed a correlation between guided and non-guided safari's, overall tour exclusivity and associated price. The more exclusive the guided safari, the more destinations visited and the more complex the itinerary, the higher the price, right? In theory, the answer is yes, but, not always."
