THE OKAVANGO DELTA

AN INCREDIBLE SAFARI DESTINATION

During my time as a guide I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to many incredible destinations around the world, but the one I keep talking about is the Okavango Delta. If ever there is a place where you just don't know what to expect around the next corner it is the Delta.

I find the Okavango Delta hard to explain as it is one of those destinations that you need to visit to truly now what it is all about. What I can say though, is that there are very few (if any) other safari destinations where there is a lower density of vehicles. I have done multiple game drives in the Delta where I only saw one or maybe two other vehicles for the entire drive. You might be wondering why this is so special. Well this means you often have a sighting all to yourself and get to spend quality time with it. Spending time with any specific animal is how you start seeing their true behaviour and therefore get to understand the species in a lot more depth.

I also find it incredible how animals have adapted to living in these swamp like landscapes (especially in the wet season). For example Wild Dogs have learned to chase prey species like Impala into the water bodies as this slows them down dramatically, but in the same breath they often don't even chase the Red Lechwe's when they are running through the water as the Lechwe's have these long legs designed to run through water at high speed.

Maybe it is just the calmness of all the birds singing in unison, or the wind blowing through the dead leaves of the Fan Palm Trees or watching a female lion guiding her cubs though the water channels. What ever it is, it moves you and finds a way to stay in your mind forever.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE OKAVANGO DELTA

Unlike most river deltas that empty into oceans, the Okavango Delta ends in the Kalahari Desert. This creates a lush oasis in the middle of arid land. The water gets absorbed by the land. None of the water reaches the sea.
The Delta floods annually from rainfall in Angola, but the water takes months to reach the Delta. This means the peak flood season occurs during Botswana's dry season.
Traditional dugout canoes called mokoros are a popular way to explore the Delta. You often can get very close to wildlife this way.
There are more than 400 species of birds in peak season in the Delta

The Okavango Delta is more than just a natural wonder- it's a living, breathing masterpiece of ecological harmony. From its seasonal floodwater that shape a dynamic landscape to the incredible diversity of wildlife it supports, the delta offers a rare glimpse into the power and beauty of untouched wilderness. From the smallest of Kingfishers to the largest of Elephants, all relies on this natural eutopia to thrive. If you are wondering if you should shortlist the Okavango Delta as a future safari destination, stop wondering and just do it- it probably will be your most memorable safari yet.

Until next time,

I find purpose in educating people about wildlife and the most iconic wildlife destinations, as this contributes to conservation. Creating memories, chasing sunsets and building lasting relationships with like minded people is what fulfils me.
