ADVENTURE STORIES

A MAGICAL WEEK IN MALA MALA

A few days ago Michael Laubscher and myself returned from a magical week in Mala Mala, hosting a Private Guided safari.

Mala Mala as a destination is one that needs little to no introduction to wildlife photographers and enthusiasts.  Having been at the centre of many wildlife films and documentaries, Mala Mala's reputation most certainly lives up to the hype.

WeThe focus during our week at Mala Mala was to spend as much time with predators as possible, to view interaction between species and hopefully be lucky enough to photograph some cubs.

To give you an idea on just how good the game viewing was during our time at Mala Mala, let the numbers below sink in for a bit...  Bare in mind we were there for six nights with a total of twelve game drives. We had a total of:

LIONS

28

INDIVIDUALS

43

SIGTHINGS

LEOPARDS

12

INDIVIDUALS

22

SIGTHINGS

So, what is it that makes Mala Mala such a productive game viewing destination?

Without a doubt, the river frontage that runs through the reserve is an absolute magnet for wildlife, especially during the dry season, which in turn attracts all the predators.  Having a permanent water source at your disposal throughout the year is a luxury not found in many places and is one of the main reasons why Mala Mala offers such incredible game viewing.

Reminiscing about our week at Mala Mala, it is hard to think of a week on safari that offered better photographic opportunities and quality sightings than what we had.  From wild dogs on the hunt, to leopard cubs and lion cubs at a den site, we had it all!

Along with the private viewing associated with a private game reserve and the expert guiding by the local guides, the experience at Mala Mala is simply first class and one that should be on every wildlife photographer's bucket list.

Until next time,

My passion for the bush and everything that comes with it started as far back as I can remember. Thanks to my parents who introduced me to wilderness areas at a very young age, I managed to live my dream by obtaining a background in conservation and being a lodge-based ranger for the past four years, working in world-renowned places such as the Timbavati and Sabi Sands Private Game Reserves.

TRAVEL TO MALA MALA
