SAFARI ADVENTURES

No visit to South Africa is complete without experiencing a safari. A safari in South Africa is a great way to experience nature and see amazing wildlife up close. It’s not just about spotting the Big Five, but enjoying the beautiful landscapes and learning about the environment. It’s an experience that creates lasting memories and helps you appreciate the wild. Here are a couple of our favourite options when it comes to safari in the different regions of South Africa:

GREATER KRUGER REGION

The Greater Kruger Park consists of a large number of private game reserves located on the western side of the world-famous Kruger National Park. There are no fences that separate the Kruger Park and these game reserves, and all animals (including the Big Five) can move freely between these areas. There happens to be so many different options that exist for a person to have a safari in this region that caters for different levels of accommodation ranging from very luxurious to rustic and authentic that offers options for a variety of budget options. These lodges are found in some of the world renowned regions such as The Sabi Sands, The Timbivati, as well as The Klaserie.

These are three lodges that we often like to use when sending our guests to the Greater Kruger:

Dulini offers a more intimate and exclusive safari experience with its boutique collection of lodges. Nestled in a pristine riverine environment, Dulini is celebrated for its personalized service, stylish suites, and excellent Big Five sightings in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve.

MalaMala Game Reserve is legendary for its exceptional wildlife viewing, especially its iconic Big Five sightings. Spanning over 13,000 hectares, Mala Mala provides luxurious accommodations and a front-row seat to nature with its prime location on the Sand River, ensuring year-round animal activity.

Bateleur Safari Camp is a hidden gem, offering an exclusive and tailored safari experience. Nestled in a private reserve, it provides luxury accommodations and excellent wildlife encounters while maintaining a focus on personalized service and an eco-friendly approach.

Each lodge presents a distinct style of hospitality while delivering unforgettable adventures in the Greater Kruger.

TIPS FOR TRAVELING IN SOUTH AFRICA

Currency
The local currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). It's widely accepted across the country, and credit cards are commonly used in most places, but it's always good to have some cash for markets or small purchases.
Transport
South Africa doesn’t have a widespread public transport system, so getting around is easiest with a car. Avis, Hertz, or other international car rental companies are reliable options for hiring a car. For short distances in cities, Uber is available in most major hubs like Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, and it’s safe and convenient.
Tipping Etiquette
Tipping is customary in South Africa. At restaurants, a 10-15% tip is standard. For petrol attendants, parking guards, and hotel staff, a small tip (R5–R20) is appreciated.
Safety
South Africa is generally safe for travelers, but it’s wise to stay cautious. Stick to well-known areas, avoid walking alone at night, and keep your valuables out of sight.
Health Precautions
If you’re visiting a malaria-prone area (like parts of Kruger or KwaZulu-Natal), consult your doctor about malaria prophylaxis. Tap water is safe to drink in most urban areas, but bottled water is a safer option in rural locations.
Packing Essentials
Bring layers, as South Africa’s weather can vary widely depending on the region and time of year. Comfortable shoes are a must for exploring cities or going on safari. Don’t forget sunscreen and a good hat, as the sun can be strong even in cooler months.
Cultural Sensitivity
South Africa is incredibly diverse, with 11 official languages and various cultural traditions. Take time to learn about the places you visit and engage with locals respectfully.
Driving in South Africa
South Africans drive on the left-hand side of the road. If you plan to self-drive, be sure to get an international driving permit if required. Fuel stations are not self-service—attendants will fill your tank and often clean your windshield, so it’s customary to tip them (R5–R10).
Electrical Plugs
South Africa uses Type D, M, and N plugs, with a voltage of 230V. Bring a universal adapter if you’re traveling from abroad.
Local SIM cards
Consider buying a local SIM card (from providers like MTN or Vodacom) for affordable data and calls during your trip.

South Africa is a destination with a bit of everything—beautiful landscapes, amazing wildlife, rich culture, and memorable experiences. Whether you're exploring the lively cities, going on a safari, or relaxing by the coast, each part of the country has something special.
