The Serengeti National Park is one of Tanzania's most renowned safari destinations, offers an unmatched opportunity to witness the Great Migration and captivating wildlife action. The park is divided into distinct regions, each offering a unique experience with the southern and northern Serengeti being particularly popular.

In the southern Serengeti, vast, flat grasslands stretch endlessly, dotted with acacia trees and rocky kopjes. This region is known for the wildebeest calving season and with that its dramatic predator action, as lions and cheetahs are often seen hunting the herds of wildebeest and zebra. The three large cats in the area (lion, leopard and cheetah) can also be spotted lounging atop kopjes or nestled in the trees, offering stunning views of the surrounding plains. The scenery here is serene, with sweeping vistas and golden grasses swaying in the wind, making it an iconic part of the Serengeti experience.

The northern Serengeti features more rugged terrain, with rolling hills, woodlands, and the Mara River cutting through the landscape. The riverbanks, lined with forests and dramatic cliffs, serve as a backdrop for wildebeest crossings the mighty Mara river, often involving tense moments with lurking crocodiles. This region is also home to exceptional predator sightings, including leopards and hyenas, adding to the area's rugged appeal.

Across the Serengeti, the skies at sunrise and sunset transform the landscape, casting magical light over the plains. Whether you explore the southern plains with its rich predator action or the northern Serengeti with its dramatic river crossings, both regions offer unforgettable wildlife encounters in one of Africa’s most pristine ecosystems.

TIPS FOR TRAVELING IN TANZANIA

Currency
The official currency in Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). It's commonly used for everyday transactions, such as shopping, dining, and local transportation. For international travelers, US dollars are widely accepted in major tourist areas, hotels, and for safari related activities. However, it's always advisable to have Tanzanian Shillings for smaller purchases, especially when visiting more remote locations or local markets. ATMs are available in larger cities and tourist destinations, and credit cards (primarily Visa and MasterCard) are accepted in many hotels, restaurants, and shops in tourist areas. It's a good idea to notify your bank in advance if you plan to use your cards in Tanzania.
Transport
Tanzania's public transport system is limited, particularly outside major cities, making renting a car the most convenient way to get around, especially for safaris or visits to more remote areas if you are not booking a guided tour with a local guide/company. International car rental companies like Avis and Hertz are available in larger cities like Dar es Salaam and Arusha, but it's important to note that road conditions can vary, and driving in rural areas might require a 4x4. For short distances within cities, taxis are available, though it's recommended to use trusted services or arrange transport through your hotel to ensure safety. In places like Zanzibar, taxis are also common, and some areas have local transport options like dala-dalas (minibuses), though they may not be as comfortable or reliable as private transport. For a smoother travel experience, especially to tourist destinations, many traveler's prefer booking organised transfers through tour operators or local guides.
Tipping Etiquette
Tipping is customary in Tanzania, and it is appreciated for good service across various sectors. At restaurants, a tip of around 10-15% is standard, especially if service charges are not already included in the bill. For hotel staff, including porters and housekeeping, a small tip of Tsh 10,000 to Tsh 30,000 (approximately $4 to $12) is appreciated. Similarly, tipping drivers, guides, and safari staff is customary, with amounts depending on the level of service, ranging from Tsh 35,000 to Tsh 60,000 (approximately $15 to $20) per day is appreciated for excellent service. While tipping is not compulsory, it is a way to show gratitude for good service and to contribute to the livelihoods of local workers.
Safety
Tanzania is generally safe for travelers, especially when sticking to well-known tourist areas like national parks, coastal resorts, and major cities. However, it's wise to stay cautious and follow basic safety practices. When in urban areas or tourist spots, avoid walking alone at night and always use reputable transportation options. It's also a good idea to keep your valuables, such as money, cameras, and electronics, secure and out of sight. Always follow the guidance of your local guides and operators to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Health Precautions
If you're traveling to Tanzania, it is advisable to consult your doctor about malaria prophylaxis, especially if visiting malaria-prone areas like the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, or Zanzibar. Malaria is a concern in many parts of the country, and taking preventive medication can reduce the risk. While tap water is generally not recommended outside of urban areas, bottled water is widely available and a safer option, particularly in rural locations or on safari. Always carry a bottle of water to stay hydrated and avoid drinking from unreliable sources. Additionally, ensure you are up to date on routine vaccinations before traveling.
Packing Essentials
For your trip to Tanzania, packing essentials will depend on the variety of experiences you're planning. Tanzania's weather can change significantly, especially when moving from the coast to higher altitudes like the Ngorongoro Crater, so it's best to pack light layers for warm days and a warmer layer for cooler evenings and early mornings on safari. Comfortable shoes are essential, whether you're trekking Mount Kilimanjaro, exploring wildlife on safari, or walking around Stone Town in Zanzibar. The Tanzanian sun can be intense, particularly in regions like the Serengeti or Zanzibar, so don't forget high-SPF sunscreen and a wide brimmed hat to protect yourself during daytime activities. Additionally, be sure to bring a lightweight rain jacket if you're visiting during the rainy season and insect repellent for protection against mosquitoes.
Cultural Sensitivity
Tanzania is a culturally rich and diverse country, home to over 120 ethnic groups, each with its own unique traditions and languages. It's important to approach interactions with locals with respect and openness. Learning a few basic Swahili phrases can go a long way in building rapport, as it's the national language spoken across much of the country. When visiting rural areas or indigenous tribes, it's essential to approach cultural practices with sensitivity, always asking permission before taking photos or participating in activities. Tanzanians are generally friendly and welcoming, and showing interest in their culture will enhance your travel experience.
Driving in Tanzania
In Tanzania, driving is on the left-hand side of the road, so be prepared to adjust if you're coming from a country where driving is on the right. If you're planning to rent a car, make sure to check whether an international driving permit is required. Road conditions can vary greatly across the country—major roads in urban areas are generally in good condition, but in more rural regions, roads may be unpaved and rough, especially during the rainy season. If you're venturing into national parks or reserves, a 4x4 vehicle is often necessary to navigate the terrain. Fuel stations are typically not self-service, with attendants filling up your tank and offering to clean your windshield. It's customary to tip them around $1–$2 for their service.
Electrical Plugs
Tanzania uses Type G plugs, with a voltage of 230V and a frequency of 50Hz. If you're traveling from abroad, it's a good idea to bring a universal adapter to ensure your devices can be plugged in. Make sure your electronics are compatible with the voltage, or use a converter if needed.
Local SIM cards
Consider purchasing a local SIM card from providers like Tigo, Vodacom, or Airtel for affordable data and calls during your time in Tanzania. These providers offer widespread coverage, especially in urban areas and popular tourist spots like Serengeti and Zanzibar. However, network coverage may be limited in more remote regions, so it’s a good idea to check coverage maps or ask locals for advice if you plan to visit more isolated areas.

Tanzania is a country full of extraordinary experiences, breathtaking landscapes, abundant wildlife, vibrant culture, and unforgettable moments. Whether you're trekking up Mount Kilimanjaro, exploring the vast Serengeti, or relaxing on the shores of Zanzibar, each corner of Tanzania offers something unique.

My passion for the bush and everything that comes with it started as far back as I can remember.
