Is your photography good enough

THE WILD EYE PODCAST

Is Your Photography Good Enough? Why It Doesn’t Matter.

Let’s talk about something that’s been on my mind lately—this idea of whether your photography is “good enough.” I’ve had this conversation more times than I can count, especially with clients during safaris, coaching sessions, and even in the office while we’re diving into Lightroom. So, let’s unpack it, shall we?

Recently, I had a client, someone I’ve worked with for years, tell me they were ready to walk away from photography altogether. Why? Because they’d never won an award or been published, and they just didn’t feel "good enough." And this really hit me hard. Not because they felt like this, but because I know they’re not alone. So many talented photographers out there are measuring their worth based on external validation—things like contest results or magazine credits—and let’s be real, that’s not the right way to gauge your passion.

Here’s the thing: photography isn’t a competition. It’s not about “winning” or getting approval from judges or strangers on social media. It’s about you. It’s about capturing the world through your eyes, telling your story, and doing it for the joy of the process. Who cares if someone on Instagram has 50,000 followers or won a camera club competition? That doesn’t mean your work is any less meaningful.

I’m all about shooting for the experience, not the outcome. I’ve been leaning more into capturing moments on my iPhone, whether I’m in New York, the Grand Canyon, or on a safari. It’s not about what anyone thinks; it’s about me and the moment. And let’s be clear: it’s okay to have a hard drive full of memories and not do anything with them. The joy is in the creation, not in some external approval.

So, the next time you ask yourself, “Is my photography good enough?” ask instead: Are you shooting for yourself, or for other people’s validation? Because if you're doing it for others, you're missing the magic of photography.

Remember: shoot for you, and the rest will fall into place. Catch you next time!
