ADVENTURE STORIES

THREE WEEKS AT ENKISHUI CAMP

The Masai Mara is one of those destinations that no matter how many times you have been, or how long you stay there, it will always deliver something unforgettable. Hosting the first three weeks of the season was nothing short of incredible. Every week brought new guests, new stories, and more memories that was being made.

From leopard and lion sightings to a last-minute crossing, these three weeks was filled with everything I love about the Masai Mara.

Before we go into all the details, have a look at the video below for a quick recap.

Despite the first two weeks still being what we call the “shoulder season” of the Great Migration, the Mara provided us with sightings that I will never forget. Our first afternoon safari started and ended with two Male cheetahs very close to camp. We where very contended to spend the whole afternoon with them, before we had to head back to camp.

And even though we knew the chances of seeing a crossing this early in the season is low, we made our way to the Sand River. We were lucky to see a big herd of Wildebeest and Zebra cross from the Serengeti into the Masai Mara. Even though crossing the Sand River is not as action packed as the other crossing points, it is still incredible seeing all the masses move as one.

Week two was extra special as I had the pleasure of co-hosting with Donovon Cross, who was hosting his very first week at Enkishui Camp. This week had some of the most memorable leopard sightings I have had in the Masai Mara. We mostly saw Nashipai and her daughter, Nadala or “the Playful One” (which is very fitting!), and they certainly put on a show for us. We hd them every day of the week, doing something different each time we saw them. From playing with one another, to up and down a tree, or just sitting on a termite mound watching a storm roll in, I really can’t complain about all the leopard photos on my memory cards.

The lion activity around camp was incredibly. At some stage it felt like every corner we turned there was another lion waiting for us. As the weeks progressed, I also realised that the lions started moving closer to the river. It was not just us waiting for the crossings to happen!

As we didn’t focus our safaris around the Mara river for the first two weeks, we explored more of the border between the Serengeti and the Mara Triangle. This has always been one of my favourite areas. We were lucky to find the Border pride, where I counted 17 individuals at some stage!

By the third week, the excitement was building! We have been spoiled by leopard, lion and cheetah sightings, loads of plains game, and patiently waiting form the crossings to happen. With the herds starting to gather on Lookout Hill, we knew that it was only a matter of time.

Finally, on our last afternoon game drive, at 18:15, just 45 minutes before we had to be back at camp, a big herd of wildebeest started running towards one of the crossing points. It didn’t take them to long before they started crossing the Mara River. And just like that, our first of many crossings for this season! As we watched the scene unfold in front of us, the sun has set behind us, and we went back to camp with full hearts, and full memory cards.

Beyond the wildlife, these three weeks were filled with incredible sightings, shared stories around the fire, and loads of memories made, and it is always a joy to see guests experiencing the magic of the Mara for the first time, or the 10th time! You realise that it is not always about the countless sightings that you have had, but about the connection you form not only with people, but also with nature.

I’m already counting down the days until I return to Enkishui Camp at the end of this month!

Until next time,

Working in the bush has developed me into a passionate guide and photographer deeply committed to capture the beauty of the great outdoors through my lens. I’m always on the lookout for the perfect shot and eager to share the wonders of nature with others.
