Trip Report: Primates of Uganda

The Primates of Uganda safari remains one of the most incredible experiences in my opinion and having just returned from hosting this experience, it has once again confirmed that statement for me.

One of the reasons this experience stands out so much is not only the fact that you get to spend time with chimpanzees and gorillas on foot, but the fact that you have multiple treks for each species ensures that you get ample opportunity to photograph these incredible animals as well as observe different behaviour and family dynamics.

During this experience, like all our other Primates of Uganda safaris, we got to enjoy two chimpanzee treks, followed by three gorilla treks with each experience being different.

Photographing both of these species can be quite tricky, especially with the low light that you encounter in the forests and with chimpanzees especially, being very active.  More often than not, the key photographic moments are when they are on the ground, either grooming one another, or when they are feeding.  Once chimpanzees are on the move, or up in the trees, the best option is to capture some moments on your phone through video where you will often get the astounding noises from the chimps as they communicate to one another.

Gorillas on the other hand tend to be a lot more relaxed naturally, feeding on the variety of plants found in the forest.  Although the low light is still very much a factor, the fact that their movements are generally quite limited, it does make it easier to capture beautiful portraits or these magnificent creatures.

If seeing chimpanzees and gorillas are on your bucket list, I would highly recommend multiple treks for both species.  As mentioned, not only will this give you a variety of images, but it will also allow you to observe behaviour from different individuals and families, all of which are unique and different from one another.

It was another very successful Primates of Uganda safari and one that remains in my top five all time experiences you could have in Africa.
