WHATS THE BEST TIME FOR AN AFRICAN SAFARI?

A month-to-month guide

Planning a safari in Africa? One of the most important decisions is choosing the right time to visit. Different seasons bring unique wildlife experiences, from the Great Migration in East Africa to optimal game viewing in Southern Africa’s dry season. This guide breaks down the best times to visit Africa for a safari, month by month in easy to understand "bite-sized" bits of safari information.

At Wild Eye, we love our clients to be as well informed as possible! We also have a wealth of knowledge and experience within our team to share with you all. So lets jump right in!

JANUARY to MARCH

Green Season and Calving Time
Lush landscapes, far fewer tourists (not in the southern Serengeti), and awesome predator action during the calving season.
Southern Serengeti (Tanzania), Okavango Delta (Botswana), Kruger National Park (South Africa).
The green season offers stunning scenery and new take on a photographic portfolio. newborn animals also attract predators like lions and cheetahs.

APRIL to JUNE

Shoulder Season and Fewer Tourists
Excellent value as rates tend to be cheaper at this time of year, transitioning landscapes as things slowly change from emerald to more dried out, and fewer visitors.
Zambia’s South Luangwa, Botswana’s Moremi Game Reserve, Namibia’s Etosha.
The rains subside, making it easier to spot wildlife as vegetation thins and fewer tourists mean a more exclusive and relaxed experience.

JULY to SEPTEMBER

Peak Safari Season and The Great Migration
Prime wildlife viewing, dry weather, and witnessing the Great Migration river crossings in Kenya's Masai Mara National Park and Tanzania's northern Serengeti.
Masai Mara (Kenya), Serengeti (Tanzania), Chobe National Park (Botswana). However, just about all of Sub-Saharan Africa will produce incredible safari experiences at this time of year.
The rains subside and temperatures drop, making it easier to spot wildlife as vegetation thins and fewer tourists mean a more exclusive and relaxed experience.

OCTOBER to DECEMBER

End of Dry Season & Start of the Green Season
Incredible wildlife concentrations as water sources start running dry, birthing season, and unique photographic opportunities as storms roll in and the emerald season begins to take over.
Namibia's Skeleton Coast and South Africa's Greater Kruger Private Reserves
Wildlife sightings remain strong, and by December, the start of the rains brings fresh greenery and new life to the bush.
