2023 Safari’s

And just like that, another busy safari year is a wrap. Thinking back, the memories and incredible moments the many guests I had the privilege of hosting and I now get to cherish is something no words will ever describe. Looking ahead at my 2023 Safari's, I cannot believe that my scheduled tours calendar is almost full.

What a blessing! I only have 12 out of 89 spots still available spread across 4 tours when looking at my 2023 safari's.

I'd hate for you to miss out and so if you would like to join me on an exciting adventure next year, please see the information on my available tours below;

Best Of Uganda

The adventure kicks off in Kibble National Park. The first three nights is a perfect introduction to life in a forest. Upon arrival we have the afternoon free to either relax. Head out on an optional wildlife activity in the area. I always recommend, walk the short trail around the lodge with camera in hand and get an idea of what photographing in a forest is like.

We enjoy two chimpanzee treks durning our time here which is a good warm up before trekking the largest primate on the planet. Photographing these busy, loud and unpredictable apes can be challenging but I can assure you that you will manage to capture some really impactful images of these creatures during the two hours you will spend with them.

Three leg rest days will be enjoyed in the famous Queen Elizabeth National Park; well known for its tree-climbing lions.

Vehicle and boat bound safaris along the Kazinga channel that links Lake Edward and Lake George will offer you the opportunity to photograph a much wider diversity of subjects than purely primates and will leave you with an incredibly well-rounded portfolio of Uganda.

Two nights spent in the area is just about enough prep time to gear up for what will be a life changing experience - Trekking the critically endangered mountain gorilla.

An area that screams diversity. This applies to your photography, landscapes, activity, animal behaviour, interaction and so much more. What's not to love?

I have attempted this many times over the years and have accepted that I will never accurately describe just how incredible this portion of the tour is.

We will spend four nights amongst the apes, tucked away underneath the tall canopy of Bwindi Impenetrable Forrest.

I recall my first visit to the area like it was yesterday. We arrived at the lodge around midday welcomed by a large family of gorilla on the lawn.

Everything about this area is just so moving. The lodge/staff, the area, the sounds, the gorilla trekking. It's such a surreal feeling and it will leave you so fulfilled.

Gorilla trekking has been described by many as a life-changing experience and is certainly one of Africa’s bucket-list encounters with nature.

Time spent in the company of Uganda’s great apes will simply never be forgotten.

It’s life changing in every way. When you look into those big eyes you connect with more than just an animal, you discover a new part of your very self.

Best Of Mana Pools

Welcome To 2023 - Michael Laubscher - Wild Eye

This experience is set apart from any other and will showcase the true diversity that  Mana Pools holds.

The adventure will start with a three night stay at Kavinga Safari Camp which isperfectly sited above the banks of the Rukomechi river, close to the famous Chitake Springs.

This area is not what you will imagine Mana Pools to be. The landscape is wooded, hilly and has beautiful dry riverbeds running through it.

Their private concession offers great flexibility including night time photography but the stand out attraction here is their termite mound shaped eye level hide.

Get right among the wildlife with an an astonishing 180 degree view of the water hole from elephant-foot level. Photographically speaking, it's amazing! You can also make use of your room and/or main area deck to photograph from.

Photographic diversity sings in this area!

The Mana Pools feel sets in en route to Zambezi Expeditions. A four night stay on the banks of the mighty Zambezi river at this comfortable yet classic camp offers the kind of intimacy with nature that can only be achieved by immersing yourself in the heart of the wild.

Fall asleep to the sound of the flowing river and chuckles of hippo and wake-up with the dawn chorus to a spectacular African sunrise. At Zambezi Expeditions you will connect with nature in a deep and meaningful way all while your senses are heightened at every second of every day.

This area sees a constant flow of wildlife through the camp as it's situated on the picturesque wooded floodplain. An area that plays host to one of the most astonishing wildlife experiences in Africa.

Walking with Africas gentle giants, lion, leopard, wild dog and so much more followed by a dinner under the African stars is truly only understood once experienced.

This area of Mana Pools that will touch your senses in every way.

This adrenaline filled adventure ends with a three night stay at in an utterly untouched wilderness paradise - Kanga camp. Home to the "armchair safari" experience.

Aside from the Zambezi River many miles away, Kanga Pan is the sole source of water in the dry season, making this an absolute haven for wildlife. This diverse area has multiple vlei lines and mixed woodland types from Mopane woodland to Jesse bush and riverine forests.

Due to the fact that the area consists of dense woodlands and that energy levels will be slightly lower at this point of the tour, I always recommend that we maximise the opportunity to enjoy the cozy little camp.

The main deck area is a perfect spot to reivew/work on some images all while photographing animals at the water in between. Incredible wildlife moments from the camp deck including; experiencing the thrill of getting eye to eye with the African elephant, are endless.

If a worthwhile wildlife sighting call comes in via the radio we can always jump into the safari vehicle and race out but unwinding as well as reminiscing about the past weeks exciting moments from the Kanga deck is the perfect way to end this adventure.

Great Migration Safari

2023 Safari's - Wild Eye - Michael Laubscher
2023 Safari's - Wild Eye - Michael Laubscher
2023 Safari's - Wild Eye - Michael Laubscher

During the Great Migration season, over 2 million animals gather on the plains of the Masai Mara setting the scene for one of nature’s most incredible spectacles and undoubtedly one of the best wildlife and photographic experiences.

We understand that the safari experience is of the utmost importance to our clients and our prime location on the banks of the Mara River in the southernmost reaches of the Mara Triangle Conservancy makes it possible for us to explore the banks of the Mara River at first light. This puts us in the perfect position to photograph the massive herds of wildebeest as they build up and ultimately start crossing the Mara River.

Furthermore, this location allows our vehicles to be at the prime crossing points at first and last light as we are less than a five minute drive from the first.

A week here is a thrilling experience is a musty at least once in your life!

The Mara river takes centre stage as the large herds need to cross the river several times during this period in order to access prime grazing locations. If the sheer number of animals is not enough, the river is where predators thrive, most notably the massive Nile crocodiles.

Each day's schedule will be decided in discussions with your guides and camp manager to ensure that we plan the best possible safari experience for you. Typically, the first few days of the tour will be focused on migration action, hoping to see wildebeest & zebra crossing the Mara River. Should the first few days yield the results we are after, we'll spend additional time away from the river in search of lions, leopards, cheetahs and more.

Don't forget about the opportunity for a sunrise balloon safari over the plains of the Mara which usually takes place in the latter half of the seven day tour.

In my, and all past guests opinions, the people you see in the above image is what makes a week at our camp in the Masai Mara truly special.

I have visited many lodges over the years and I am still struggling to find lodge staff as, humble, authentic and willing as our team in Kenya.

All that they do including the Maasai cultural evening, will take your stay at the to a new level, as our team share traditional songs, dances and even a meal in honour of your stay with us. I don’t want to give too much away but suffice to say that this is one of the most authentic and memorable cultural experiences on offer in the whole of the Masai Mara.

By combining the exclusivity of the Wild Eye Mara Camp and the passion, knowledge and experience of our team, we have taken the Great Migration Safari in Kenya to a whole new level, providing what we believe to be the very best Migration safari in Kenya available in the Masai Mara.
