Dense forest that forest wildlife

A primary feature is the occurrence of “bais” or salines. These are swampy, grassy clearings in the otherwise dense forest that forest wildlife visit on a regular basis in order to drink, feed on sedges and grasses, and obtain minerals and salts.

Western Lowland

This vast, wild region with its wide range of landscapes, is home to an incredible diversity of life. It holds globally significant populations of Western Lowland Gorilla, Chimpanzees and Forest elephant as well as a plethora of other species: 430 bird species and more than 100 mammal species of which around 50 are classified as medium- or large-sized. Other species include Forest buffalo, Leopard, Bongo, Giant forest hog and Hippo. Clouds of spectacular butterflies are characteristic of the region. The trees are spectacular: ancient giants well over 50 metres tall emerge from the canopy, delicate orchids cling to the branches, while the forest floor is littered with an incredible array of pods, fruits, flowers and fungi.

6 Highlights in the Region

Habituated Western Lowland Gorillas

Gorilla tracks in Odzala and Sangha entail a maximum of 3-4 guests, as well as a guide and a tracker. The gorillas can then be observed for 1 hour going about their usual activities (often in the trees). The primate researchers at the camps, whom you may get to meet, work with the gorilla families on a daily basis to maintain familiarity. The gorilla tracking philosophy is to allow the gorillas’ natural behaviors to continue, uninterrupted, as we observe from a respectful distance.

Forest Elephant

It is an absolute privilege to see these gentle giants of the forest whilst exploring Odzala-Kokua National Park and Sangha Trinational. Forest elephants are an elusive subspecies of African elephants and inhabit the densely wooded rainforests of West and Central Africa. Their ears are more oval-shaped and their tusks are straighter and point downward (the tusks of Savanna elephants curve outwards).

Forest Buffalo

Forest buffalo also known as the dwarf buffalo and the Congo buffalo, is the smallest subspecies of the African buffalo highlight. A herd of African forest buffalo typically consists of one or occasionally two bulls and a harem of adult females, juveniles and young calves. Unlike Cape buffalo bulls, African forest buffalo bulls remain with the herd continually, year-round.

True Adventure

Expeditions to this region usually involve transfers by light aircraft to access the most remote of locations. Game drive vehicles, boats and kayaks are used to navigate roads and waterways whilst a lot of time is spent on foot exploring ancient elephant boulevards carved into the waterlogged landscape over hundreds of years.

Wildlife of Gabon

Forest elephants and hippos are seen regularly surfing the waves just beyond the coastline of Gabon. They’re joined by Red River Hogs, Leopard, Chimpanzee, Civet, Forest buffalo, hundreds of bird species and old and new world monkeys — even record-sized fish, Humpback whales and a snapping crocodile or two.

Experience True Exclusivity

Exploring the Congo Basin and surrounds is an experience that very few people will ever be able to have in their lifetimes. It is not uncommon for our groups to be the only guests in an area at any given time making adventures to these Central African regions one of the most exclusive and unique experiences imaginable.
